Ask the Questions Nobody's Asked Yet Plus More

There was no mistaking that voice—Larry King, sitting across from presidents, movie stars, authors, and athletes. But what always struck me wasn’t who he interviewed—it was how he got them to open up.

He had a way of pulling stories out of people that no one else could. Today, I’m channeling a little Larry: simple, direct, no-nonsense advice to help you capture the stories that make your family who they are before they fade away.

1. Ask the Questions Nobody’s Asked Yet

The best stories don’t come from small talk. They come when you lean in and ask, “What’s something about your life no one knows?” or “What’s the one decision you’d make differently?” Everyone’s waiting to tell their story—you just have to ask.

Tip: Don’t settle for dates and facts. Ask questions that spark reflection, regret, pride, or laughter.

2. Get the Story Before It’s Too Late

One of the greatest regrets people have is realizing they never got their parents’ or grandparents’ stories down. Life moves fast. People pass on. Don’t wait. Make the time, sit down, record the conversation—even if it’s just on the back porch.

Tip: Don’t overthink it. Grab your phone, hit record, and let them talk. You'll thank yourself later.

3. Keep It Real—No Gloss, No Sugarcoating

People want to make family stories sound perfect. But the real power is in the honesty—the mistakes, the struggles, the funny little failures along the way. That’s what makes a story human. That’s what makes it stick.

Tip: Encourage your loved ones to tell it like it is. Because the truth is always more interesting than a polished version.

Until next time,
