2/20/2025 Chase the Small Details Plus MoreTo capture your family’s history in a lasting way, forget the history book approach. Instead, focus on the small details, the moments of tension, and one great scene. Here’s how to do it right.
1. Chase the Small Details—They Tell the Bigger Story Grand events make headlines, but life happens in the details. The creaky kitchen chair where Grandpa always sat, the smell of Sunday sauce bubbling on the stove, the click of Mom’s high heels in the hallway—those are the things that make memories stick. Tip: Instead of asking, “Tell me about your childhood,” try, “What did your house sound like in the morning?” Sensory details bring a story to life. 2. Get the Tension—Every Good Story Has Some A smooth, perfect life isn’t interesting. People relate to struggle, hesitation, and even failure—because that’s real. The best family stories aren’t just about what happened but why it mattered. Tip: Ask about conflicts, big or small. “Was there ever a time you were scared to do something but did it anyway?” That’s where the heart of a good story beats. 3. Forget the Whole Life Story for a Minute—Zoom In on One Great Scene Nobody wants to read a laundry list of events. The best stories don’t cover everything—they zero in on one defining moment and make it unforgettable. Maybe it’s the night your dad slept in his car to make a job interview or the summer your grandmother learned to swim at 60. One scene, well told, can say more about a person than an entire timeline ever could. Tip: Instead of asking, “Tell me about your life,” try, “Tell me about a time you took a big risk.” The right moment will tell the whole story.
