3/13/2025 There Are No Ordinary PeopleSometimes, I will run into someone who thinks their story isn’t worth telling.
In times like these, I’m reminded of what C.S. Lewis said on the matter: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat…Next to the blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses.” (“The Weight of Glory”, sermon at the Church of the St. Mary the Virgin, Oxford, June 8, 1942). It’s a funny thing, isn’t it? How we measure worth by the loud and the large—how many headlines, trophies, and records broken. But that’s not how time measures a life. No, time tells its tales in quieter ways. A father’s steady presence at the dinner table. A mother’s whispered encouragement before the big game. The friend who stays through the hard years. The shopkeeper who gives a little extra. The teacher who sees what no one else does. The great civilizations, the mighty nations, the dazzling empires—they come and they go, their lifespans brief as the flicker of a firefly. But the people? The lives quietly shaping the world in unseen ways? They are the ones who endure. I’ve spent years telling stories—real ones that don’t make the front page but leave an imprint all the same. And I have yet to meet a life without worth. Because here’s the thing: when you look close enough, no story is ordinary. When people say no one will read their stories, I say, "I’m still waiting to meet a boring person!" There is only the mismanagement of stories.
